ORGANISATION REPORTS

October 2010 - Madginford WI welcomed Mrs Sandy Sharp who gave a fascinating and information packed talk on ‘British Calendar Customs’. Folk music and dance, she illustrated with pictures, her singing and concertina playing. She explained the origins of customs - from Celtic, Romans, to modern day - activities engaged by urban and labouring classes to celebrate holy and secular days, collecting monies and bringing communities together. Morris dancing was originally danced by rich young men on hobby horses. The importance of light and warmth as demonstrated in the number of fires and candles and the Yule log, featured. Members learned also of Mummers (masked actors), processions of Royal Courts, City and Guilds; and more about hot cross buns; wrens’ feathers; Oak Apple Day, All Hallows Eve - leading to ‘trick or treat’; egg rolling - and eating; pancakes; cheese rolling; Plough Day; Wassailing; saints’ days; dolls (including our local Biddenden Siamese twin dolls); reindeer horns; Beating the Bounds, Jack in the Green, bottle kicking; well dressing and much more,

Invitations were accepted for Bearsted &Thurnham Fayre Committee’s distribution of cheques ceremony, and plans were finalized for the trip to France.

Members were thanked for providing the successful, rapid ‘sell out’ cake stall at Hollingbourne's garden safari/garage sale.  Design ideas flowed for the 2012 Olympic Games pennant to be produced.

The next meeting is on Thursday 11 November at 8.00pm in Madginford Hall, Egremont Road, Bearsted - in house sweet manufacturing. Visitors and new members will be welcomed - just turn up or Tel:  01622 738455 / 753514 / 861725.

(However, reservations are required for December Christmas party.)
