Bearsted Parish Council supports Cricket on Bearsted Green

8th December 2011

Following comments made on the ‘Save Bearsted Cricket Club’ group on Facebook this week, Bearsted Parish Council would like to reassure the people of Bearsted and Bearsted Cricket Club once again that it has absolutely no wish to stop cricket taking place on The Green, in fact quite the contrary. Cricket has been an integral part of Bearsted village life on The Green for over 200 years and we categorically state that we have no desire to stop this.

What the Parish Council have been doing over recent months, as custodians of The Green, is to work with the Cricket Club, local residents and a Maidstone Borough Councillor to update our Heads of Terms with the Cricket Club, as the current lease is out of date and needs updating. The Draft Heads of Terms are currently being reviewed by the Parish Council and will be passed on to the Cricket Club next week for their review and input. This document is in draft form only and a subsequent meeting will be set up with the Cricket Club to discuss the contents and agree a final version.

Following the cancellation of the Music Of The Green event earlier this year on The Green, Bearsted Parish Council has been made more acutely aware than ever of its responsibilities towards events held on The Green and has to ensure a ‘duty of care’ – however as stated earlier we do not want to see cricket stopped and we are working with all parties to reach an agreement.

Bearsted Parish Council remains committed to maintaining our wonderful Green as an open space for community use, and wholeheartedly supports the aim of keeping cricket on The Green.  We welcome your comments through the forum on this website.
